Over 70 Troopers Deployed to Impacted Areas

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police (ISP) officials reacted quickly to deploy manpower and resources when parts of northern Illinois were hit with a large tornado late Thursday evening, 04/09/15, a little before 7:00 p.m.  The tornado was on the ground for over 25 minutes moving northwest and causing extensive damage in northeast Lee, southeast Ogle, and northwest DeKalb counties.

The worst areas hit areas were rural Rochelle in Ogle County and Fairdale in DeKalb County. Approximately 49 structures were damaged, with over 30 entirely lost in the Rochelle area.  In the Fairdale area, approximately 71 structures were reported to have damage, with 20 entirely lost. 

Two deaths in the Fairdale area have been confirmed, 11 serious injuries requiring transport and numerous minor injuries have been reported throughout the region, as well as several pet deaths. One area restaurant, Grubsteakers, was hit while approximately 12 patrons were inside (no life-threatening injuries were sustained). Final rescue efforts are now concentrated in DeKalb County. All structures have been searched but cadaver dogs are being utilized since not all residents have been accounted for.

The Illinois State Police were notified at approximately 7:15 p.m. and immediately began sending resources.  ISP Troopers assisted with rescue operations, traffic control, and scene security. The first Troopers on scene began searching damaged structures/residences for victims.  Numerous vehicles were blown from the interstates (I-39 and I-88) and Troopers checked on all occupants. ISP also assisted in the rescue of a trapped driver in an overturned truck tractor semi-trailer. 

ISP Units will continue to provide scene security and traffic control in the affected areas.  A request has been made to maintain ISP resources in the area through tonight’s midnight shift.  Preparations have been made and Troopers will be assigned throughout today and tonight.
