History of the Division of Internal Investigation

On July 1, 1977, Former Governor James R. Thompson reorganized the Department of Law Enforcement through Executive Order 2-77 into two commands, Area I (Chicago) and Area II (Springfield). This replaced the Office of Special Investigations which had the sole responsibility to investigate and expose corruption and malfeasance among Illinois State Employees who were directly subject to the governor.
