KANE COUNTY HiVE CAMPAIGN

 Over 1,800 Citations Issued in 24-Hour Period

Elgin, IL – On April 26, 2019, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP), AAA, the Illinois State Police, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, the Kane County Chief’s Association, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Kane County State’s Attorney's Office the Kane County Department of Transportation, the Kane County Health Department -Medical Reserve Volunteers and Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) , Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, the Think First Foundation, Northwestern Medicine - Delmar Hospital,  and Advocate Health Care - Sherman Hospital, along with local community and law enforcement agencies within Kane County, participated in the Kane County High Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) Campaign to help reduce fatal and injury crashes caused by distracted driving on roadways throughout Kane County.

 The HiVE program is a partnership with the ILACP Traffic Safety Initiative that places a large number of law enforcement officers in high collision areas during peak travel times to improve safety.  The first ever Kane County HiVE Campaign took place on April 26, 2019, during Illinois’ Distracted Driving Awareness Week. Participating law enforcement agencies within Kane County issued a total of 1,827 citations, including 527 distracted driving citations, over 111 seatbelt citations, 1,176 citations for other traffic violations, and 1,327 written warnings. The enforcement campaign also resulted in 80 arrests, including 23 Driving Under the Influence arrests, and 20 Wanted on Warrant arrests.

This ILACP initiative is a data driven approach aimed at reducing injury collisions in areas with high collision rates by flooding these areas with law enforcement officers. Distracted driving kills 10 people every day. Removing your eyes from the road for just two seconds doubles the risk for a crash. According to a survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, nearly 80% of drivers believe texting while driving poses a significant danger, but 35% of drivers report doing so regularly.
