Illinois State Police Engage and Encourage Students During Black History Month

Chicago- Illinois State Police (ISP) Officials are actively encouraging students during Black History Month by being actively engaged in their communities and helping the youth aspire to greatness. 

On February 23, 2017 The Illinois Association of African-American Officers (A.B.L.E.) sponsored 30 minority students at Crete-Monee Middle School to see the movie Hidden Figures. The movie tells the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program. This movie was chosen to inspire children to reach their greatest potential. Emphasis was placed on excelling academically, being active in their communities, and turning their dreams into achievable goals through hard work. In addition, this event allowed the participants to discuss with the African-American Troopers how they achieved success through hard work and dedication.

The Illinois State Police recognizes the significant contributions African-Americans have made for the department, and their communities. Sponsorship opportunities such as this one and collaborations within the community are first hand examples of law enforcement agencies and communities can work together. This event along with the many other events A.B.L.E will host throughout the year shows the dedication and consideration given towards:

Building bridges between law enforcement agencies and the community at large

Supporting the pursuit of post-secondary education for

Providing scholarship opportunities to African-American youth

Promoting racial harmony and cultural pride within the law enforcement community

Educating the community about and promoting an understanding of the law

Promoting professionalism among A.B.L.E.’s members

A.B.L.E. would like to thank everyone who played a vital role in establishing this platform including the brave students whom we met, the teachers who inspire, and the parents who are diligently working hard to raise these youths. A.B.L.E will continue to make history and educate the community, not only during Black History month, but every day, in every month!
