The Illinois State Police Announce the Arrest of Gregory Nelson

Collinsville, IL – The Illinois State Police announce the arrest of Gregory K. Nelson, age 52, of East St. Louis.  Today at approximately 5:45 p.m. Nelson was taken into custody by the U.S Marshals Service and the Illinois State Police at an apartment in St. Ann, MO.  The fugitive felony warrant was served without incident.

Nelson is being charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon.  The charges stem from a shooting that occurred on the I-255 northbound entrance ramp from State Street in East St. Louis. 

On June. 23, 2015, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a Trooper conducted a traffic stop on the northbound entrance ramp to I-255 from State Street in East St. Louis.  The Trooper, a nine year veteran, suspected that the driver, Nelson, was intoxicated and asked Nelson to exit the vehicle for field sobriety testing.  At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, he pulled out a gun and fired at the Trooper.  The Trooper returned fire and Nelson fled the scene on foot.  Neither the Trooper nor Nelson were injured during the incident. 

Nelson is currently being held by authorities in Missouri pending extradition to Illinois.  No further information is available at this time.     

THE PUBLIC IS REMINDED THAT ALL ARRESTED PERSONS ARE MERELY ACCUSED OF THE CHARGES AGAINSTTHEM AND ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNLESS PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW.
