Suspect Wanted For Attempted Murder Against An Illinois State Police Trooper

East St. Louis, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) is requesting the assistance of the public in locating a suspect wanted for the officer involved shooting that occurred near I-255 and State Street in East St. Louis.

Charges have been filed and warrants have been issued for Gregory K. Nelson, age 52, of East St. Louis, Illinois. Nelson is wanted for Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and Unlawful Use of Weapons by a Felon. Nelson is believed to be in the East St. Louis area.

On June 23, 2015, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a Trooper conducted a traffic stop on the northbound entrance ramp to I-255 from State Street in East St. Louis. The Trooper, a nine year veteran, suspected that the driver, Nelson, was intoxicated and asked him to exit the vehicle for field sobriety testing. At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, Nelson pulled out a gun and fired at the Trooper. The Trooper returned fire and Nelson fled the scene on foot. Nelson was last seen running south southeast from the scene. The Trooper was not injured and it is unknown if Nelson is injured.

Nelson is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on the location of Nelson is asked to call the Illinois State Police at 618.346.3990 or your local law enforcement agency. If it is an emergency situation, please dial 911.
